Choosing the right rug size can completely transform a room. One of the most common decorating mistakes is purchasing a rug that is too small for the space. A properly sized rug helps define furniture zones, creates balance and can even make a room feel larger.
As a general rule, interior designers recommend choosing the largest rug your space and budget allow. In living rooms, at least the front legs of major furniture pieces should sit on the rug. In dining rooms, the rug should extend beyond the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.
| Room Size | Recommended Rug Size |
|---|---|
| Small Living Room | 160x230cm |
| Medium Living Room | 200x290cm |
| Large Living Room | 240x330cm or larger |
Quick Rug Size Rules
• Bigger is usually better than smaller
• Leave some visible flooring around the edges of the room
• Ensure furniture feels connected to the rug
• Avoid rugs that only sit under the coffee table
• Match round tables with round rugs where possible
Dining Room Rug Size Guide
A dining room rug should extend at least 60–80cm beyond the dining table on all sides. This allows chairs to remain on the rug when guests pull them out, creating a safer and more comfortable dining experience.
Bedroom Rug Size Guide
For the most luxurious look, choose a rug that extends 50–70cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. This creates a balanced appearance and provides a soft landing when getting out of bed.
